Why do I take Biotin?
I take a biotin supplement almost every day, although I have to give credit to my roommate who recommended this to me. She was painting her nails one day and I noticed how nice and long her nails were. After I commented on it, she told me she makes a point to take a Biotin supplement every night. Now, I used to never pay too much attention to my nails, but after becoming a flight attendant, it is part of my job to ensure that I look clean and polished every day that I work. A lot of flight attendants wear fake nails, but I don’t like how it leaves your nails looking once you take them off. Plus, my nails grow so fast that it is not very practical financially or time-wise. You could also try the gel nail polish that’s becoming more popular, and while that certainly has its benefits, I still don’t always have time every week and a half to get my nails done. I wanted something to make my own nails look better. That’s where Biotin comes in.
I take a 2500 mcg supplement every night (or at least when I remember!). That’s on the upper limit and I don’t think it’s quite necessary since it is about 800% of the recommended daily dosage, so a 1000 mcg supplement or even 500 mcg supplement would be sufficient too. (Disclaimer: I am not a doctor and do not have any medical experience or licensing. All of this is based on my own experience and knowledge. I do not know how different the effects would be between 2500 mcg and 500 mcg.) Most multi-vitamins include Biotin too, although they generally have more of a focus on the B Vitamins, Iron, Calcium etc. My current multi-vitamin only has 30 mcg which is why I added in the Biotin. I just keep the bottle with the rest of my medicines, and then include it in my nightly routine. I started taking it about 3 months ago and I can definitely say there has been an improvement in my hair and nails. My nails are stronger and my hair feels silkier. Without even bringing up Biotin, I have gotten a few compliments on how healthy my hair looks. My nails have been breaking less, so they are also a bit longer than I used to wear them.
Where to Buy Biotin
Biotin is pretty cheap. I can’t remember the exact price, but I bought my first bottle at Target for less than ten dollars. You can also buy it on Amazon for less. Here’s the link to one with 150 capsules for just a few dollars.
I would definitely recommend trying out a Biotin supplement if you’re looking for an inexpensive way to have healthier skin, nails, and hair. Keep it by your birth control, vitamins, toothbrush, or even on your nightstand, and take one every morning or night. It is very low-maintenance- and I think you will see an improvement in just a few weeks.
