Biotin: Product Review

Why do I take Biotin?

I take a biotin supplement almost every day, although I have to give credit to my roommate who recommended this to biotinme.  She was painting her nails one day and I noticed how nice and long her nails were. After I commented on it, she told me she makes a point to take a Biotin supplement every night.  Now, I used to never pay too much attention to my nails, but after becoming a flight attendant, it is part of my job to ensure that I look clean and polished every day that I work.  A lot of flight attendants wear fake nails, but I don’t like how it leaves your nails looking once you take them off.  Plus, my nails grow so fast that it is not very practical financially or time-wise.  You could also try the gel nail polish that’s becoming more popular, and while that certainly has its benefits, I still don’t always have time every week and a half to get my nails done.  I wanted something to make my own nails look better.  That’s where Biotin comes in.

I take a 2500 mcg supplement every night (or at least when I remember!).  That’s on the upper limit and I don’t think it’s quite necessary since it is about 800% of the recommended daily dosage, so a 1000 mcg supplement or even 500 mcg  supplement would be sufficient too.  (Disclaimer: I am not a doctor and do not have any medical experience or licensing.  All of this is based on my own experience and knowledge.  I do not know how different the effects would be between 2500 mcg and 500 mcg.) Most multi-vitamins include Biotin too, although they generally have more of a focus on the B Vitamins, Iron, Calcium etc.  My current multi-vitamin only has 30 mcg which is why I added in the Biotin.  I just keep the bottle with the rest of my medicines, and then include it in my nightly routine.  I started taking it about 3 months ago and I can definitely say there has been an improvement in my hair and nails.  My nails are stronger and my hair feels silkier.  Without even bringing up Biotin, I have gotten a few compliments on how healthy my hair looks.  My nails have been breaking less, so they are also a bit longer than I used to wear them.

Where to Buy Biotin

Biotin is pretty cheap.  I can’t remember the exact price, but I bought my first bottle at Target for less than ten dollars.  You can also buy it on Amazon for less.  Here’s the link to one with 150 capsules for just a few dollars.

I would definitely recommend trying out a Biotin supplement if you’re looking for an inexpensive way to have healthier skin, nails, and hair.  Keep it by your birth control, vitamins, toothbrush, or even on your nightstand, and take one every morning or night.  It is very low-maintenance- and I think you will see an improvement in just a few weeks.

Clarisonic: Product Review

I purchased the Clarisonic Mia 2 sonic skincare brush after reading Maria Menounos’ book, The Everygirl’s Guide to Life. In her book she raves about the Clarisonic brush’s face cleaning ability, and credits it with helping to keep her skin clear and acne-free.  For most of my post-puberty life I’ve had very clear skin and almost no problems with acne, but recently I’ve started to struggle with it again. I’m not sure what changed! But all of a sudden I’ve started to break out constantly. So OBVIOUSLY I had to give the Clarisonic brush a try!

How & Why to Use the Clarisonic

The Clarisonic brush is used with facial cleanser at night to clean your face. The website says it removes 6x more makeup clarisonic mia 2 and 2x more dirt and oil than just washing your face with your hands. It’s kinda like an electric toothbrush for your face. By cleaning your skin better it helps the beauty products you use work more effectively. Over time it should minimize the appearance of pores and prevent blemishes.

I’ve been using it every night for the recommended 60 seconds (20 seconds on your forehead, 20 seconds on your nose/chin and then each cheek for 10 seconds).  When you push the button the brush automatically turns on for 60 seconds with timed pulses when you are supposed to switch areas.  I’ve also been using it before I apply my weekly facial mask.  I definitely feel like my face is cleaner after using it and it is helping to get my acne under control. I haven’t had a breakout since I’ve started using it. My pores feel smaller and my face feels tighter after using the Clarisonic.

I would definitely recommend the Clarisonic to anyone that is in the market to buy one. I can’t say it works miracles, but I haven’t had a breakout since I started using it. I think my skin looks much clearer and healthier. For those reasons, I don’t want to stop using it—I’m officially an addict. Now if I go to sleep after just washing my face with my fingers, my skin feels dirty all night.

Another reason to invest in a Clarisonic cleaning brush would be if you get facials at a spa frequently (I’m guilty!). By using the Clarisonic brush I feel like I can go longer between facials–so in this way it’s a money-saver. Also if I didn’t have this brush helping to clear up my acne, I would probably be spending a fortune on acne treating face products.

If it really is getting your skin cleaner like it says it does (and I believe it does), it probably has lots of long term benefits as well. I would imagine that over time keeping your skin cleaner, pores smaller and having products work better would help your skin age less. For this reason I’ve also been using my Clarisonic on my neck and chest.

Where to Buy?

clarisonic mia 2 boxI bought my Clarisonic Mia 2 on Amazon for $121. There are a couple different brush options but that’s the one I chose. It comes with a trial facial cleanser, however I use mine with Dermalogica’s Special Cleansing Gel (another product Maria Menounos recommends). It also comes with a charger and a sensitive skin brush head. The Clarisonic Mia 2 has two speeds, while the regular Clarisonic Mia has one. I don’t think the two speeds have much extra value, so if you’re looking to save a couple dollars the regular Mia is probably just fine. If I was buying it again I would just buy the regular Mia. The brushes are both portable and small enough to bring with you when you travel. The Clarisonic brush needs to be charged about twice a month, but once it’s charged it’s cordless. The brush head needs to be replaced every 3 months; you can buy a two pack of replacement heads on Amazon for $27.

If you have a Clarisonic, what do you think of it ? We’d love to hear your opinions in the comments!

I honestly really enjoyed reading Maria Menounos’ book—The Everygirl’s Guide to Life. She has some great skin care, makeup and maria menounos bookwardrobe tips as well as tips for all other aspects of life.  As soon as I read her book I went to Amazon (and other places around the web) to buy all of her must-haves. If you’ve read her book, I’m sure you are doing the same! And if you haven’t read her book and are interested in the beauty products she likes, I would highly recommend reading it because she gives excellent tips on the best ways to use them. Here is a list of her favorite products with links to where you can buy them online.

Maria Menounos’ Favorite Skin Care Products

In her book Maria Menounos discusses that one of the first steps to great skin is a healthy skin care routine. Here are some of the products she uses in her skin care regimen:

She cleanses every night with Dermalogica Special Cleansing Gel after using Neutrogena wipes to remove her makeup.

  • Dermalogica Special Cleansing Gel
  • Neutrogena Wipes– to remove makeup (Sidenote- Lisa: I swear by these too! They really do the trick without drying out my skin, or irritating my eyes.  They are great to travel with too- easy to just toss the pouch in your tote or suitcase and you don’t have to worry about liquid restrictions either.)
dermalogica products

Maria Menounos swears by Dermalogica face products.

Menounos sprays toner on every morning and night.

While Maria Menounos likes to use all the Dermalogica products, the Vitamin E cream is a less expensive option that she likes to use on her neck and hands in addition to her face.

Eye Cream:

Powder Sunscreen:

Menounos says powder sunscreens are great for constant reapplication of sunscreen UV protection throughout the day.

Maria Menounos likes to apply a mask once a week.

And she exfoliates every two weeks.

clarisonic brush

Clarisonic brushes clean your face better than just using your fingers!

Clarisonic Brush– Maria Menounos swears by the Clarisonic brush. She says it’s the best way to remove makeup and grime off your face and that it’s 6 times better than just washing your face with a washcloth. Clarisonic brushes are like electronic toothbrushes but for your face–they work off the same technology.

For Getting Rid of Sun Spots:

While Maria Menounos likes both DDF products to get rid of sun spots, if she had to use only one she would get the DDF Correct and Protect.

For Preventing & Dealing with Acne:

Other Hair Products:

She has these products and more, along with tips on how to use them in her book; and I highly suggest it!  Not only that, but she goes into detail on lots of other areas of her life- including diet, exercise, and even on how to pack for a trip.  It’s a great book to get you motivated to give your body (and life!) a little makeover.  I hope this list helps you easily purchase any of Maria Menounos’ favorite makeup, beauty or hair products.
